Pavement

An interesting report from APM’s Marketplace about day jobs (or second jobs) for members of bands like Pavement, The Vandals, The Circle Jerks, Iron Maiden and more.

The big takeaway? Pavement was pulling down $130k per year EACH at the height of their career.

Really loving this series of articles on 90’s alternative rock by Steven Hyden.

Following music took real work if you happened to 1) be under 18, 2) live in a small town, 3) get paid a small allowance, 4) not have a driver’s license, and 5) have limited access to media that could tell you about the latest groups. Keeping up with underground music was practically impossible; you couldn’t just log on and dial up a million blogs offering up free music without leaving your bedroom. Underground music was actually underground; you had to venture out and look for it, and only after somebody let you in on the secret that it was actually there. Maybe I could’ve discovered Pixies’ Bossanova had I searched a little harder, but how could I look for something that I didn’t even know existed? For me, what I heard on the radio and saw on MTV was the only music there even was.

This is really well timed, as I’ve been going back and reacquainting myself with a lot of the music from that era. It certainly doesn’t hurt that many of my favorite bands of the 90’s – James, Underworld, Teenage Fanclub, Social Distortion, Pavement and many others – have come through town and played local shows in the past 30 days.

If nothing else, be sure to read his piece on Pearl Jam. It’s very well-written and totally spot on.

Andrew Innes talks to the Guardian about the band’s first Akai S1000 sampler and what it meant to the band’s sound:

“Suddenly we could experiment. You’re a rock’n’roll band, but you can take a James Brown drum loop and play along with that; you can add horns, you can add strings. The engineer would give you a floppy disk with some tablas on it and you’d stick that in the sampler and try that. It was like we’d been painting in black and white and suddenly we had a full palette of colours to play with. The sheer imagination that went into these records on everyone’s part… it was people let loose with their ideas: we’re out here in space now.”

Johnny Marr is 47 years old today.  Here is my favorite YouTube video about him. Unsurprisingly, it involves Noel Gallagher.
